We are tracking reports of audio degradation (crackling/micro-stuttering) when streaming high-fidelity media (e.g., 48 kHz / 24-bit) via Firefox Mobile on Android 16.
Root Cause
This is a known architectural conflict between Mozilla's GeckoView and the Android OS, not a bug in our software:
This is a known architectural conflict between Mozilla's GeckoView and the Android OS, not a bug in our software:
- Buffer Underruns: Firefox’s audio thread faces starvation due to Android 16's strict AudioFlinger scheduling.
- Resampling Errors: Firefox lacks robust 24-bit format negotiation, causing truncation errors at the Android HAL level.
Workaround & Recommendation
- No user fix: Adjusting Android battery settings does not resolve runtime scheduling issues.
- Recommendation: Use a Chromium-based browser (Chrome, Brave, Samsung Internet) until Mozilla updates GeckoView.
